Mechanical Design and Performance Analysis of a Weevil-Inspired Jumping Mechanism

Jumping mechanisms constitute an important means of resolution in applications such as crossing uneven terrain and space exploration. However, the traditional design mainly uses engineering thinking, but seldom studies structural characteristics organisms themselves lacks biomimetic research basis, which leads to difference between jumping mechanism biological structure its ability. On other hand, it in-depth study on from view engineering. Weevil has excellent performance, key jumper is specially designed by biologist. To investigate motion working mechanisms, this paper takes weevil bionic object, designs a weevil-inspired mechanism. A miniature prototype reproduce weevil’s with principle anatomical verify how work, turns out perform well at height. This presented mechanism, followed explanation analysis kinematics dynamics, then performing virtual simulations compare different schemes, results guiding parameter optimization subjecting machine into height test. In comparisons among existing whose method bio-inspired, present design, weighs 44.7 g can jump maximum 2 m. The establishes biologically inspired provides new practical archetype studies.
